Like cellphones, computers and iPods, SunPass, too, is evolving and getting leaner. But unlike the others, it offers fewer functions.
The latest portable transponder — the SunPass Slim — is barely an inch wide, compared with the original plastic transponder, introduced in 1999, which is about the size of a deck of cards. And the new version doesn't beep to signal drivers have paid a toll when they pass through a plaza or under a gantry. But the lack of beeping doesn't seem to bother many consumers. Sticker tags, which are not portable and do not beep, are gaining in popularity. Introduced in July 2008, there were active 3,138,611 tags as of Jan. 9, compared with 3,125,639 transponders.

What's the advantage of the new transponder over the sticker tag?
Although the SunPass Slim costs $25 vs. the $4.99 tag, the Slim can be used in all vehicles registered to your SunPass account. The sticker tags can't be transferred. Once you remove the sticker tag from your windshield, it won't work.
What features are not available on the new portable transponder?
Beeps, lights and display.
Why weren't these features included?
The technology of the earlier models — first introduced in 1999 — was slower and it took longer for the transponder and the toll plaza to exchange information. With the launch of open road tolling, officials say it was important to shorten transaction times. In the digital world of 2013, customers no longer need a transponder display to see their account balance. They now have almost immediate access to their history via computers, cell phones and other mobile devices.
How do I know if I've paid a toll if my transponder doesn't beep?
Check your account online. Or call SunPass at 888-865-5352 to arrange to have a statement mailed to you for $1.50 a month. You can obtain up to 18 months of statements online at no charge.
Does the new transponder require batteries?
No. The feedback features in older models — beeps, lights, display — required batteries, which needed to be replaced. Officials say the lack of batteries makes the new portable model more reliable and saves users replacement costs.
If I have an old transponder, can I still use it?
Yes. But some of the features such as the beeps, lights and display won't work, depending on the model because those extras have been phased out.
How many drivers pay tolls electronically with SunPass vs. cash?
About 8 in 10 drivers use SunPass. At rush hour on some stretches of the turnpike such as the Homestead Extension in Miami-Dade County, it's even higher.
How about using SunPass outside Florida or E-ZPass in Florida?
Not yet. Officials are working on details that would allow users to pay for tolls outside their respective system. Starting in July, drivers in Florida and North Carolina who pay tolls electronically can use their transponders in either state. North Carolina uses Quick Pass.
