Dear Madam Gardner,
We live in the Netherlands (both Dutch citizens) and wish to get married on our holiday in Florida in May. There will be no family or friends with us. We just simply want to get married. ....Ofcourse there will be a party when we're back at home.
We have many questions about getting married in Florida, hopefully you can answer them as much as possible.
We want to get married in Florida, probably Orlando. We allready know we need a marriage license, so that will be the first thing to do. We're arriving on May 6th (that's on a fridaynight). Where can we get a marriage license and will it be open in the weekends? You can only get a marriage license at any County Courthouse and no they are not open on weekends.
Can we only buy a marriage license in te place where we're gonna get married? You can purchase a marriage license in any county in Florida and get married anywhere in the state of Florida. How much will a marriage license cost us?$93.50 and this is payable by cash or credit (we do not accept VISA)
Is it possible to get married without an appointment (like in Las Vegas)? Or is it wise to make a reservation? If so, how and where? If you would like, you can also get married here at the courthouse for a fee of $30.00. No appointments are necessary, we are open from 8 – 5 Monday through Friday.
Because we are together we don't have any witnesses (in the Netherlands you need 2 witnesses to get married). Will that be a problem? The State of Florida does not require witnesses.
Can you please tell us exactly which steps we have to take to get officialy married in the US? (for example which documents from the Netherlands do we need to bring with us). The only documents that you will need to present to the clerk when you come to purchase your license will be your passports.
Most important: what do we have to do to make our marriage legal in the Netherlands? You should check with your government there as we would not have the answer to that.
We've heard about apostille and sending our papers to Tallahassee. How does this work? You will send your certified copy of your Marriage License to Tallahassee, they will acknowledge that this is a legitimate license and return to you. When you apply for your license we will give you their address and telephone number and you can contact them directly.
We want to thank you in advance for your time!
