A bird's-eye view of the vastly-expanded Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom Park offers Guests a new land of enchantment in a magical fairy tale forest just beyond the castle walls.
Within the next few years, “young-in-heart” Guests will have even more ways to live out their most imaginative dreams at the Walt Disney World Resort.
During a surprise announcement at the D23 Expo, Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, revealed plans for a grand expansion at Magic Kingdom Park that will double the area’s size by 2013.
The expansion will offer new immersive entertainment for fans of characters, princesses and Disney fairies.
“Meeting a Disney princess is always a special highlight of any Magic Kingdom [Park] visit,” Jay said. “No longer will you wait in a long line just to meet a princess.”
Instead, Guests will be able to meet with them in their own themed castle, cottage or chateau, and the experience will go beyond just cheerful greetings, autographs and photos. These new areas will allow Guests to celebrate Sleeping Beauty’s birthday, dance with Cinderella, or meet Belle in the Beast’s library for a story. At Pixie Hollow, Guests of all sizes can shrink to the size of pixies and interact with Disney fairies. Guests also can train to be one of Cinderella’s royal knights, or grab a bite to eat at Gaston’s Tavern or inside Beast’s castle.

A new attraction will take Guests through beautifully rendered scenes featuring favorite songs from the popular animated feature.
Jay also revealed plans for the addition of a new “dark ride” attraction based on The Little Mermaid, as well as the expansion of an opening-day classic attraction.

Guests are invited to step into the big top and join the circus before their magical flight over Fantasyland on Dumbo the Flying Elephant.
“Dumbo [the Flying Elephant] is the most popular attraction in Fantasyland,” Jay said. “You said you wanted more chances to ride it. We’re doubling [its] size.”
Instead of waiting in line, Guests can wait for their turn on Dumbo the Flying Elephant, while playing interactive games in a nearby circus tent.
The Fantasyland area of Magic Kingdom Park made its debut on the park’s opening day Oct. 1, 1971, and many of this land’s original attractions still can be experienced today: Mad Tea Party, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, Cinderella’s Golden Carousel, Peter Pan’s Flight and it’s a small world. Only a few attractions have been added over the years, including The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in 1999 and Mickey’s PhilharMagic in 2003.
"Transforming an entire 'land' is something we’ve never done before, and from what I’ve seen, it’s going to be spectacular," said Phil Holmes, vice president of Magic Kingdom Park. "This is truly a great time to be a Cast Member and I’m looking forward to watching our bright future come to life."
Jay also announced plans for a 2011 debut of a new 3-D version of the tremendously popular Star Tours attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Enhancements will result in the temporary closing of the attraction until the reopening in 2011.
“We are going to do things with Star Tours that have never been done before in theme park attractions,” Jay said.

In an exciting scene from the new Star Tours, Guests aboard Starspeeders will join in a high-speed pod race through the desert canyons of Tatooine.
The force has been with Guests nearly 20 years as they have cruised one of the six Starspeeder 3000 flight simulators and slipped into a fantasy film-world, while experiencing the ultimate Star Wars thrill ride.
Star Tours opened in December 1989 and found its home on Soundstage 12 on the Backlot of the then Disney-MGM Studios. Designed from the viewpoint of a camera lens, the attraction has since served as a centerpiece of the park’s annual Star Wars Weekends event.

Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Executive Tom Fitzgerald joins Industrial Light & Magic Visual Effects Supervisor Bill George and Star Wars creator George Lucas to review show concepts for the new Star Tours adventure.
Based on the iconic Lucasfilm Star Wars films, the 41/2 minute show was created as the result of collaboration between the film’s writer, producer and director, George Lucas and the Walt Disney Imagineering team. The use of original Star Wars footage shot exclusively for the attraction, realistic props, special effects and interactive thrills have made Star Tours a hit among Guests.
The attraction will include new immersive and interactive elements that will take Guests to many familiar places in the Star Wars galaxy in 2011.
“This is a great example of Disney’s investment in the future and our continued focus on delivering an outstanding and immersive Guest experience,” said Rilous Carter, vice president of Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Park Event Operations. “We’re thrilled about re-inventing and re-imagining an attraction that is based on Star Wars, a phenomenon that continues to evolve with a new animated series and new fans in each generation.”
