Riverwalk, Watertaxi en het Strand.

Een van de beste opstap punten voor de watertaxi is bij de River Walk.
Je kunt je auto parkeren vlak voor de River Walk in de parkeer garage.
Van I95 neem de afslag Broward Blvd naar het Oosten.
De eerste twee mijl even de deuren op slot.
Over het spoor de eerste afslag rechts Brickel Avenue, en daar is de parkeer garage.

Las Olas Riverfront is een soort shopping center met vele uitgaans gelegenheden en
er zijn leuke barretjes zoals Hooters en Dan Marino's Town Tavern.
Op de tweede verdieping aan de westkant van het plein is een bar met een gigantisch ingewikkelde ijs machine.
Het ijs wordt er via een trap boven in gegooid en komt na vele zichtbare omzwervingen via de zwaarte kracht
weer naar beneden in een emmer, leuk om te zien onder het genot van een Rum Runner of een biertje.

Aan de overkant van de New River ligt Shirttail Charlie's. Dit restaurant is genoemd naar de eeuwig dronken indiaan Charlie
die hier lange tijd heeft rond gehangen. Er is een bootje dat je naar de overkant kan brengen en naar verluid zijn er,
en daar is het magische woord, "Complimentary after dinner cruises on the New River!".

Om de hoek, op loop afstand, via de riverwalk westwaards ligt een historische plek, het oudste gebouw in Broward,
het Stranahan House. De heer Stranahan was een handelaar in diverse goederen, aan de New River.
Na verloop van tijd gingen de zaken danig minder en op 22 Mei 1929 sprong Stranahan met tuinhek en al de New River in.

Vlak bij aan de River Walk is het Old Fort Lauderdale Village & Museum gevestigd.
In deze buurt liggen meerdere musea, de adressen kun je verderop allemaal vinden.

De volgende stop is Las Olas Boulevard. Je kunt hier met de watertaxi komen het is een of twee stops.
Maar eigenlijk is het leuker om de benewagen te nemen. Als je aan het water bij Las Olas Riverfront staat
sla je links af, naar het oosten, is het nog geen vijf minuten lopen en je ziet al het gedoe op het water.

Vlak voor de brug zie je aan de overkant de meest lullige gevangenis van de wereld.
Moet je je voorstellen jij slijt je jaren hier met uizicht op hooters en alle andere uitgangs plaatsen, geen pretje.

Als je bij de brug de trap op gaat en naar het noorden loopt, kun je een kranten winkel vinden waar je
diverse Internationale kranten kunt krijgen.

Na de brug, aan de overkant is de Downtowner Saloon and Waterfront. Deze bar heeft een speciale atractie.
Elke Woensdag avond wordt er, traditie getrouw, de Jungle Queen gemooned (met de blote billen begroet).
Je kunt hier T-Shirts kopen met de opdruk "I MOONED THE JUNGLE QUEEN".
Leuk verhaal voor de kleinkinderen.

De riverwalk neigt nu naar links en komt uit op Las Olas Boulevard, ga naar het oosten.
Op een bepaald moment loop je over een voetgangers brug. Onder je razen de auto's, kijk naar rechts en daar is hij,
de Henry E. Kinney Tunnel, de enigste tunnel in Florida.

Las Olas Boulevard is een gezellige bijna Europese aandoende winkelstraat. Slenter rustig voort en
hoor het gekwetter van de papagaaien die hier in het wild rondvliegen.
Ze nestelen in de bomen, welke de middenberm van Las Olas sieren.
Leuke zaken zo als Tommy Bahama etc. Kijk ook eens in de steegjes. Deze steegjes huisvesten diverse restaurants met prachtige binnentuinen.
Loop niet verder dan tot aan de brug, hierna begint de gewone bebouwing en rondlopende touristen worden, speciaal in de zijstraten niet zo op prijs gesteld.

Als je de kasten van huizen toch wil zien doe dit dan met de watertaxi, of de Jungle Queen, mischien wel op Woensdag avond?

Op de terugweg loop je terug aan de overkant van de straat. Halverwege de straat is een ontzettend leuke winkel te vinden met allerlei bizzare kado's. Je kunt het niet missen.

Na al dit lopen dorstig geworden? Een biertje bij L'Europe aan de overkant, zittend op het terras en naar de mensen kijken.
Een zeer aparte kans want de meeste cafe's aan Las Olas hebben geen terras.
Ook leuk is de Italiaan aan deze kant van de straat tegenover L'Europe, hier kun je prima lunchen.

De volledige tocht met de watertaxi is een langdurige zaak, en ik zou als je maar een dag hebt niet drie uur in een bootje willen zitten.
Nu is het tarief $5.- voor de gehele dag en daar kunnen we mooi gebruik van maken.
Als de kapitein een geweldige prater is geef je hem wat extra fooi.

Ik heb de volgende trip meerdere malen met de watertaxi gemaakt en dit is een mooie mix van een aantal leuke zaken.
Pak de watertaxi waar je maar wil maar zorg ervoor dat ze naar het oosten gaan anders duurt je tocht veel langer.
Persoonlijk vindt ik de watertaxi leuker want het is meer een avontuur, je zit laag in een bootje,
en je kunt als je niet oplet aardig nat worden. De Jungle Queen is een radar boot, met eten en entertainment. Ook niet te versmaden.

Via de New River vaar je langs allerlij kasten van huizen, ik laat me meestal afzetten bij de 15th St. Fishery, 1900 SE 13th Street.
Hier worden om vijf uur de pelikanen gevoerd, maar regelmatig komen ze even kijken of het al tijd is.
Als je onder het genot van de beste conch chowder (een soort vissoep) van de wereld naar het water zit te staren zal het je opvallen dat het bij de pier er nogal woelig aan toe gaat.
Dit zijn de tarpon, vissen van zo een meter lang die naar alles happen. Als je wilt kun je naast het restaurant in de bait shop, voor een paar dollar,
grote garnalen kopen en deze monsters vanaf de pier voeden.
Pas op je vingers, want de beestjes zijn bijziend.

Als je rond de kerst in Ft. Lauderdale bent is het de moeite waard om naar de diverse verlichte boot parades uit te kijken.
Honderden boten varen verlicht rond en de mensen op de boten zijn geweldig uitgedost.
Heb je diepe zakken dan kun je een en ander vanuit en restaurant bezien.
Reken wel op een fixed prijs van minstens $100.- per persoon.

Nu pak je de watertaxi die terug gaat. Deze laat je nog meer huizen zien en je laat je afzetten bij het Marriot Towers
of zeg gewoon dat je naar de beach wilt. Loop nu drie blokken naar het Oosten en voila, daar is het strand en de boardwalk.
Wil je van het gedoe genieten slenter dan naar het zuiden.

Halverwege vindt je een mix van winkels en restaurants, BeachPlace.
Met onderandere Cafe Iguana, Fat Tuesday, Hooters, Howl at the Moon, LuLu's Bait Shack, Sally O'Brien's and Sloppy Joes.
Zelf ben ik niet zo onder de indruk van BeachPlace.
Maar als je met de auto bent en je wilt naar het strand dan kun je hier parkeren. Ik zou verder zuid slenteren
en op de hoek van A1A en Las Olas de wereld beroemde Elbo Room met een bezoek vereren.
Probeer op het verhoogde buiten terras te zitten en vermaakt is gegarandeerd.

Als je met de auto komt moet je weten dat A1A hier een richting verkeer is. Van Las Olas kun je alleen maar naar het noorden rijden.
Als je de afslag links neemt vlak voordat A1A twee richting verkeer wordt en meteen weer links gaat,
vindt je aan je linker kant diverse parkeer plaatsen.

Ben je met de watertaxi gekomen en staat je auto bij de River Walk in de garage, ga dan niet terug met de watertaxi.
De reis terug met de watertaxi duurt zeker anderhalf uur.
Pak een taxi en voor een paar dollar sta je in een wip bij de parkeer garage.

Extreem Winkelen en Dineren, Kinderen, Hobby, Mall's

Na zo een dag op het water en aan het strand wil je ook wel eens wat anders doen.
Een van de grootste passies van de Amerikaan is shoppen. Er zijn rondom Ft. Lauderdale
een groot aantal shops die voor nederlandse begrippen exteem groot en soms ook mooi zijn.

Moeders wil natuurlijk niets liever dan de gehele dag in de mall rondhangen en van alles uitproberen.
Maar wat te doen met Pa en de kinderen. Ook voor deze gezins leden is er genoeg te doen.

De Outdoor World Bass Pro Shop heeft ook een filiaal in Orlando, je kunt hier uren ronzwerven,
terwijl je je vrouw bij de swap shop afzet. En de kinderen worden gedropt bij Boomers of de Hurricane.

En dan is er de Sawgrass Mills. Deze gigantisch grote uitverkoop mall met in mijn ogen een aantal
interessante uitblinkers zoals de Ron Jon Surf shop en de Cheese Cake Factory.
De gratis sticker's van Ron Jon zijn goud waard, en een
geweldig kado voor elke (wind) surfer.

Onderstaande winkels, parken en restaurants zijn allemaal in een omtrek van op zijn meest 15 kilometer
van het hartje van ft. Lauderdale, Las Olas Riverfront en gegroepeerd op lokatie.

Als je de aanwijzingen van de Festival Marketplace hebt gevolgt, ben je op een steenworp afstand van de

Zo rond de kerst is er een geweldige lichtshow in het park aan de overkant. De lichtshow is gratis en
zeker de moeite waard als je in de buurt bent.

Swap Shop owner detained after confrontation
Broward Sheriff's deputies used a Taser to subdue one of the county's political and economic power brokers
Friday after he barricaded himself in his office then rushed at them "in a threatening manner," a sheriff's spokesman said.
Even after a jolt of 50,000 volts, Preston Henn, 74, continued to struggle as he was led out of the Swap Shop
and forced into a squad car. Inside, he kicked out the car's backseat window after screaming for his sons to help him.
Henn's son, Byron, said his father's behavior might have been caused by changing prescription medication.
He did not say what the medication was for. Deputies went to the Swap Shop twice on Friday to try to settle a
conflict between Henn and one of his vendors. At one point, Henn had to be handcuffed because he began acting "irrationally,"
said sheriff's spokesman Hugh Graf. When he appeared to calm down 45 minutes later, deputies removed the handcuffs.
Henn surprised them by racing to a golf cart, driving to his office, and barricading himself inside.
