    Shuttle Team Working Foam Issue
During a routine inspection overnight after the draining of the external fuel tank, a crack was discovered in the foam near a bracket that holds the liquid oxygen feedline in place. This piece of foam has been estimated to be 0.0057 pounds. It is believed that the rain experienced during yesterday's launch attempt caused water to run down the feedline and form ice near the top of the strut next to the feedline bracket. As the tank warmed and expanded, the ice that formed most likely pinched the foam on the top of the strut, causing a crack and eventual loss of the small piece of foam.

At a Mission Management Team meeting this morning, a decision was made to continue analyzing available data before making a final decision regarding tomorrow's launch attempt. The question is whether there needs to be a hands-on inspection of the area around the foam crack before launch.

The Mission Management Team will meet again at 6:30 p.m. EDT to hear the results of the analysis and make a decision on whether we will attempt to launch tomorrow or Wednesday. Currently, there is a 60 percent of favorable launch weather for tomorrow and a 40 percent chance of favorable weather for Wednesday.

Technicians continue repairs on the external tank from the hail damage caused by a severe thunderstorm that passed through the Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39 area in late February. During the Flight Readiness Review, NASA's Space Shuttle Program managers unanimously decided to proceed with the STS-117 mission, pending the work to make necessary repairs to the damage. A new target launch date has not been determined, but teams will focus on preparing Atlantis for liftoff in late April.

update 03.30.07 4 p.m.In high bay 1 of the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. work is under way to assess and repair hail damage to the external tank, ET-124. Special scaffolding and platforms have been erected to allow access to the tank and orbiter for inspections and repairs. Foam repairs on the liquid hydrogen tank, which is located on the bottom of the external tank, are complete. The focus is currently on repairs to the liquid oxygen tank. Shuttle program managers will meet on or about April 10 to decide whether to use ET-124 or substitute it with a new tank, ET-117, which is scheduled to arrive at Kennedy in early April. During the STS-117's 11-day mission, the six-member crew will install a new truss segment, retract a set of solar arrays and unfold a new set on the starboard side of the station. Lessons learned from two previous missions will provide the astronauts with new techniques and tools to perform their duties. Atlantis Commander Rick Sturckow, Pilot Lee Archambault and Mission Specialists Jim Reilly, Patrick Forrester, Steven Swanson and John "Danny" Olivas will continue training at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston as they await a new target launch date. rond 10 april weten we meerzelf vertrek ik 7 aprilvoor info www.nasa.gov

NASA managers will hold a news conference at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., no earlier than 2 p.m. EDT, Thursday, May 31, to discuss the status of the upcoming space shuttle mission. The news conference will begin after the end of a Flight Readiness Review, a two-day meeting to assess preparations for Atlantis' mission.
What is the flight readiness review?
we gaan nu echt voor 8 juni , hieronder de update
    05.31.07 - 3:45 p.m. EDT
Following the Flight Readiness Review meetings on May 30 and 31 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA's senior managers have signed the Certification of Flight Readiness confirming that Space Shuttle Atlantis, her flight crew and payloads are fit to fly. Officials approved June 8 as the scheduled launch date for the STS-117 mission to the International Space Station.

"We had a very good review for the past day and a half," said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations. Referring to the repairs on the external tank, Gerstenmaier said proudly, "I don't think I've ever seen an effort done better than was done by the external tank team…they did a phenomenal job to give us a flight-ready tank to go fly."

"We're good to go," said Wayne Hale, Space Shuttle Program manager. "We have no show stoppers ahead of us."
