Ik zou graag de shuttle launch meemaken, maar vind dat de veiligheid van de astronauten toch op de eerste plaats moet komen.

Wij hebben gisteren KSC bezocht en de lancering staat nog steeds gepland op 23 oktober. De shuttle staat trouwens al op launchpad A.

Wij vertrekken helaas overmorgen, maar Cocoa Beach lijkt me de ideale plek om de lancering gade te slaan.

Wat het park zelf betreft, heb je twee inkomprijzen, iets eind de 30 dollar en iets eind de 50 dollar (waar je dichter bij lanceringsplatform raakt)

Wij namen de 30 dollar en vertrokken direct met de bus naar drie stops (uitkijktoren dichtbij VAB, Apollo 8 hangar en stopplaats gewijd aan ruimtestation ISS-MIR)

Die tour is absoluut de moeite en duurt een drie uur. Terug in het park moet je keuzes maken. Wij deden de shuttle lauch experience wat wat tegenviel. Op zijn Amerikaans was er vooraf weer heel wat show rond, maar de experience zelf vond ik wat tegenvallen. Wat geschud van hoofdsteun en hier en daar wat gerommel en kabaal...

Wat ons wel beviel was de 3d show rond de maanwandelingen. 45 minuten genieten en zowel leerrijk als visueel schitterende effecten. Absoluut een aanrader en zeker ook met kids, allen jammer dat het enkel in Engels is...

Vandaag was op het locale nieuws hier dat de lancering nog steeds doorgaat. Er is wel wat schade aan het hitteschild maar niet erg genoeg om de lancering uit te stellen. De reperatie zou namelijk 2 maanden duren en dat zou het shuttle programma flink vertragen.
Ze nemen dus de gok.......

Shuttle ready for launch, NASA says, but weather may not cooperate
CAPE CANAVERAL - The shuttle Discovery's countdown is scheduled to start Sunday but NASA forecasters are weather could interfere with predicting a marginally acceptable weather for a launch on Tuesday morning at 11.38 a.m. Otherwise, NASA Test Director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson reported that the 120th shuttle space flight -- Discovery's 34th -- was set to go. "In summary, all of our systems are in good shape," she said during a news briefing Saturday. "Our countdown is on schedule. I have no issues to report. Our team is ready. Discovery is ready."
Mother Nature may not be as cooperative. NASA forecasters said a new weather system is moving into the area Sunday, bringing with it rain and low cloud cover, lightening and possible visibility problems at Kennedy Space Center next week. "There is a 40 percent chance of KSC weather prohibiting launch," said Kathy Winters, the shuttle weather officer. Similar conditions are likely throughout the week. According to Blackwell-Thompson, NASA has enough fuel and supplies on hand for four launch attempts over five days. The first launch window is 10 minutes long, starting at 11.33 a.m. on Tuesday. NASA's plan is to aim for the middle of the first window. With a 60 percent chance of good weather sometime in the launch period, NASA was upbeat that Discovery would lift off as scheduled. "Right now it doesn't look great, but having many days without having an attempt is not typical." Winters said. "Usually we have a good day in there somewhere." The goal of Discovery's flight is to deliver a new multi-hatch module that will serve as the gateway to European and Japanese research labs scheduled for launch in December, February and April. The shuttle crew also plans to move a set of solar arrays to its permanent mounting point on the end of the station's main power truss. The launch will take place amid concerns about hairline cracks in some of Discovery's wing panels, which shield the craft from the heat of re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. NASA mission managers decided on Wednesday that the cracks did not pose a sufficient risk to postpone the mission, despite opposition from half the engineers who took part in the launch review. Crew members who arrived at the spaceport on Friday to prepare for take off said they backed NASA's call to skip wing repairs. The decision was crucial to keeping the final 13 space-shuttle flights on schedule until the fleet's scheduled retirement in 2010. NASA is under pressure to wind down the shuttle program in 2010 to make room for its next program to put astronauts back on the moon.
