Die brand is alweer ruim 5 jaar terug. Laatste keer dat ik er was hadden ze albino aligators, dat was in 2010.
Gelukkig hebben ze geen 16 meter lange python in Gatorland.

Wij waren dus 5 november naar Gatorland geweest. Toen dachten we nog, over een weekje gaan we nog een keer. En dan zet je in de ochtend Foxnews op en zie je als eerste de brand. Dat is toch best schrikken.

En wat is er mis met een 16 meter Python? :-\"

Panters in Gatorland??



Ja, in het gloedjenieuwe Panther Springs, Gatorland's newest attractie. Twee mooie panters.

Gatorland: Residents of new Panther Springs settle in

The newest residents of Gatorland are warm-blooded and furry. Neiko and Lucy, a brother-sister pair of Florida panthers, have moved into a new habitat dubbed Panther Springs. The 7-year-old big cats moved in early this week and are getting accustomed to their new environment, a 2,000-square-foot area shaded by cypress trees with a pond, platforms to climb and nap upon, and grass on which to stretch. Their ears perk up when they hear the bellows of neighboring alligators.

Gatorland guests can observe the panthers up-close through a wall of glass on one side or, from a slight distance, through wire netting on one end. The transition to their ceiling-less home on the north end of the park is going well, says Tim Williams, Gatorland spokesman. "Once you see them grooming themselves, we know they're pretty comfortable," he says.

Neiko and Lucy were raised by a Florida conservationist who wanted them to have larger living quarters. They are naturally nocturnal, so their activities are somewhat sedate during the day. So far, they wander closest to the glass during the afternoon, when that area is shadiest, Williams says.

Just like little cats, they are prone to napping and playing with lizards. However, in the wild, they would be powerful forces, says Danielle Lucas, one of four Gatorland animal trainers assigned to Panther Springs. "These guys would go right for your jugular," she says.
The $200,000 exhibit expands Gatorland's collection of animals native to Florida. The Florida panther was listed as an endangered species in 1967. It became the official animal of the Sunshine State in 1982.
"Here's a chance to tell a story about something that's really struggling," Williams says.

More Panther Springs notes:
+ Gatorland isn't starting a breeding program of the Florida panthers. The animals are related -- and neutered.
+ The panthers are fed raw meat, including beef and chicken. They don't like pork, but they love liver. They also like "blood popsicles."
+ They purr, but they don't roar. Their sound is more like a chirp, Lucas says (they sometimes hiss, she says).
+ Lucy is laid-back, while Neiko is more of a ham, trainers say.
+ They aren't fans of cowboy hats or the color red, it appears.

Gatorland breidt uit met 70 dieren die ze gekocht hebben van het recent gesloten Everglades Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs.
Onder de nieuwe dieren is een 4.5 meter grote alligator met de mooie naam Bonecrusher 2, in navolging van de ooit al in Gatorland aanwezige Bonecrusher (1).

Gatorland is adding more than 70 animals -- including a 15-foot American crocodile known as Bonecrusher II -- to the attraction after purchasing the creatures from the recently closed Everglades Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs.

New to Gatorland will be giant alligators, crocodiles, pythons, boa constrictors, rattlesnakes, bobcats, white-tailed deer, scarlet ibis and raccoons.

Everglades Wonder Gardens, a family-run attraction that opened in 1936 and closed last month, had a longstanding relationship with Gatorland, said Mark McHugh, Gatorland's president and CEO.

"Our families have known each other for well over 50 years," he said. "Two pioneer outdoorsmen, [Gatorland founder] Owen Godwin and [Everglades Wonder Garden's] Lester Piper, started very similar attractions with similar philosophies of sharing the wonder of Florida's plants and animals with locals and tourists."

The acquisition has a family-reunion feel: The original Bonecrusher, father of Bonecrusher II, was a big draw at Gatorland in the 1950s and '60s. It was billed as the largest croc in captivity, and founder Godwin offered a $1,000 reward to anyone that could prove that Bonecrusher didn't meet that claim.

Godwin never had to pay up. Bonecrusher died in 1971.

Bonecrusher II weighs about 1,400 pound and can jump 7 feet out of the water, a Gatorland official says. A special enclosure has been built for him at his new home at the Orange Blossom Trail attraction.

Zonder dat ik extra dingen wil doen, zoals betaalde excursies e.d.

De shows zijn erg leuk en vooral de wandeling over de boardwalks (de swamp walk) en door de breeding marsh vinden wij erg mooi.
Wij gaan er meestal een halve dag heen.
Dit park is ook goed te doen op je laatste dag als je een terugvlucht hebt in de late middag of avond.

Wij zijn vorig jaar in mei voor het eerst geweest, vonden het erg leuk! Eigenlijk veel leuker dan verwacht. Lijkt in niets op de Disney parken en de dergelijke (die we ook ontzettend gaaf vinden). Echt een aanrader om een keer te doen.

Een hele dag is misschien wat veel. Ik vind het een echte halve-dag-attractie. Mooi te combineren met een andere "attractie" aan dezelfde weg (Orange Blossom Trail): The Florida Mall. Of The Loop.
Samen in ieder geval genoeg om de dag door te komen.

Wij kregen trouwens zonder enige navraag de bejaardenkorting aangeboden.
Even een andere vraag. We hadden dus de kaartjes met de shows genomen. Echter er werd helemaal nooit naar gevraagd en ook bij de rest van het publiek niet.
Hebben we iets gemist of verkeerd gedaan?
