Family rescued after van goes into ocean at Daytona Beach
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. —
A group of rescuers came to the aid of a woman and children in a
minivan that went into the ocean at Daytona Beach Tuesday afternoon.
A woman from South Carolina drove the vehicle into the water just before 5 p.m., according to Capt. Tammy Marris with
Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.
Lifeguards were able to get everyone from the vehicle before it became fully submerged.
In video taken by a tourist from Canada, the woman can be seen outside the van as lifeguards try to pull her children from the vehicle. Waves nearly
pushed her under the van.
One lifeguard is seen walking out of the surf with two children in his arms.
With the front of the van nearly submerged, another lifeguard climbed out of the back of the van with a third child.
The three children, ages 10 , 9 and 3, and the woman were transported to a local hospital for precautionary reasons, Marris said.
Investigators said the woman was incoherent when they tried to speak with her.
Marris said her office was still investigating how the
minivan ended up in the water.
