Flight of the butterflies (Oct. 27): St. Marks Refuge, about 25 miles south of Tallahassee, is the last stop for thousands of migrating monarchs butterflies before they hop over the Gulf of Mexico to their winter vacation spot. Every year on the fourth Saturday of October, St. Marks Refuge has its annual Butterfly Festival to marvel at the tired New England butterflies who "just know" to drop down and feed on salt bushes there, which bloom about the time they arrive in mid to late October. Then they wait for the wind to shift offshore and carry them toward Mexico. The refuge will hold its Butterfly Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 27, with guided butterfly walks and talks, a tent filled with live butterflies, crafts for children and van tours to the spots where butterflies are feeding.
