Vandaag in de St. Petersburg Times:

Cypress Gardens files bankruptcy
The company that owns Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven and Wild Adventures in Valdosta, Ga., is asking for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from its creditors.
Adventure Parks Group LLC of Valdosta said it will keep the parks open and honor season passes while reorganizing its finances. The company blamed damage from the 2004 hurricane season and an unresolved dispute with its insurance company for its financial woes.
Cypress Gardens closed in 2003 and reopened in 2004 under new ownership.
The filing in the Middle District of Georgia lists assets of $10-million to $50-million and debts of $50-million to $100-million.

Cypress Garden files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Cypress Gardens, the 70-year-old central Florida theme park saved from the wrecking ball two years ago, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing debts incurred after it was hit by three hurricanes in 2004.
"Charley, Frances and Jeanne, that's what happened," Adventure Parks Group spokeswoman Sara Sumner said of the bankruptcy petition filed Monday in federal court. "We took three direct hits from those storms and the insurance company has balked at paying those claims."
The Winter Haven park, one of the oldest in Florida, will remain open and no major cutbacks are planned, Sumner said. All passes and discounts will be honored.
"This was a step to protect the park, the employees and the guests who come to the park," Sumner said. "It's a chance for us to reorganize. We don't expect any job losses. Our guests and our employees won't see any changes."

Ward Stone Jr., the company's bankruptcy attorney, said the park's insurance company has yet to pay most of the more than $25 million it cost to repair hurricane damage. The park is about $70 million in debt, he said. The bankruptcy filing lists more than $50 million in debts, including $1.1 million to an Atlanta landscaping firm.
Cypress Gardens opened in 1936 and was a hit for decades, but it was unable to compete later with the sophisticated attractions at nearby Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens. It closed in 2003.
Valdosta, Ga., theme park operator Kent Buescher bought Cypress Gardens for $7 million under a complicated deal that involved state and local government and a nonprofit conservation group.
After a $45 million investment in four roller coasters, 34 other rides and new restaurants, Cypress Gardens reopened on Dec. 9, 2004, hoping to find a niche in central Florida's crowded tourism market.

Buescher, who owns Wild Adventures in Valdosta, kept the signature hoop-skirted belles, gardens and the water skiers, but hoped to lure a new generation of tourists with roller coasters with names like "Triple Hurricane," named for the trio of storms that hit the park.
Loyal fans who rallied to save the park were doubtful of Buescher's plans to build more thrill rides in the theme park-saturated Orlando area, but supported him because he agreed to keep park's traditional attractions intact.
"I'm devastated," said Burma Posey Davis, president of Friends of Cypress Gardens, who personally lobbied Gov. Jeb Bush to commit state funds to rescue the park in 2003. "I do hope it can be saved in the restructuring because it means so much to us. We applaud all the things Kent did, but it appears our concerns were founded. The roller coasters weren't enough to draw people away from Orlando."

Legoland California features 50 rides, shows and attractions. Merlin officials say some of the signature Legoland rides will be featured at Legoland Florida.
Kids and kids at heart will have a new place to play soon.
The new owners of Cypress Gardens announced today they are turning the attraction into Legoland Florida. The theme park is scheduled to open in October 2011 and will create 1,000 jobs, Merlin officials said.
They don't plan to stop there. They will develop Legoland Florida Resort which will include a hotel and a water park, to be opened at a later date.
Merlin paid around $22.3 million for Cypress Gardens, according to the Polk County Property Appraiser's Office. Land South, the previous owner, shut down the attraction in September, saying the park was not economically viable.
Merlin officials say they chose the Winter Haven site partly because it already has the landscaping typical of other Legoland parks in the world. That speeded up the development plan, and allows the park to open in less than two years, as opposed to four or five years if they had decided to open a park in Orlando.
They plan to create ways to combine the Legoland theme with the water ski show and botanical gardens that have been part of Cypress Gardens' appeal since it opened as Florida's first amusement park in 1936.
Merlin officials did not disclose how much money they would invest in reinventing the park, but said it would be substantial. They expect more than 1.5 million visitors when the park launches.
Gov. Charlie Crist attended today's announcement.
"There could not be a better time to get this kind of economic injection in Florida," he said.
Ticket prices have not been finalized, but company officials said they would be similar to the ones for Legoland California, which charges $67 for adult one-day passes and $57 for children ages 3 to 12 and adults over 60.
Legoland Florida will be geared toward children ages 2 to 12 and will include signature Legoland rides such as the kids' Volvo Driving School. Legoland California offers 90 rides, shows and entertainment areas.
Merlin operates 59 attractions, six hotels and two holiday villages, according to a company statement. It has Legoland theme parks in Carlsbad, Calif., the United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark. It also operates attractions that include Madame Tussauds wax museums and a chain of aquariums called Sea Life.

Groetjes,
Oscar
